Celebrating Diversity

Dear All,

The past two weeks have been amazing. With over 600 views, I believe this is the herald of greater things.

This week on vox pop, the theme is celebrating diversity. Stemming from her unique heritage and blend of cultures, Cameroon has often been referred to as Africa in miniature.

Encouraging all youths to share their thoughts on their favourite aspect of Cameroonian and African culture, ranging from food to climate.

Please send all submissions to our facebook page at

And to kick off.....here is an aspect of Cameroon that makes me smile.

Enjoy.....

September 3rd 2008, at the African Leadership Academy campus in Johannesburg South Africa, I sat pondering about what aspect of Cameroon embodies our heritage as a people. I was an ambassador for my country – I wanted to make my peers understand what makes Cameroon a place to visit.

Then it dawned on me:  Cameroonian music embodies our culture, through its unique genres of makossa and bikutsi. Makossa is a type of funky dance music, best-known outside Africa for Manu Dibango; whose 1972 single "Soul Makossa" was an international hit. Bikutsi is based on a war rhythm played with various rattles and drums and xylophone.

The lyrics of our music, tell any listener our past and our future aspirations as a nation. The melodies celebrate our diversity, food, culture, football victories and beauty. And the rhythm... mesmerises the listener, drawing him in and keeping a smile on the face of every Cameroonian.  To sum up, Cameroonian music celebrates our unity amidst diversity.
