International Women’s Day Centennial - A Year On!

Over time and space, the equal rights of women have progressed and as a reflection of the progress made thus far, this year’s theme for International Women’s Day is: “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women”.

Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8, a global momentum which advocates gender equality.

International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. Since those early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

Thus on this day March 8 2013, we celebrate the achievements of every woman everywhere, while remaining vigilant and tenacious for further sustainable change.

Happy Women's Day!
